The MPX-90M impact printer marks two-dimensional DataMatrix barcodes as small as 1 mm on a wide variety of medical instruments such as forceps, tweezers, scalpels and other surgical tools. This proven technology imprints unique device identification (UDI) numbers quickly and affordably, allowing for easy tracking and traceability and resulting in better patient safety. In addition to 2D DataMatrix barcodes, the MPX-90M is capable of imprinting numbers, text, logos and graphics on virtually any metal surface.*1 Designed for ease of use, it comes with its own software for producing precise, durable imprints that remain readable throughout the product lifecycle.
The MPX-90M is the latest addition to the MPX line of metal impact printers. It is targeted specifically at the medical industry: By 2015, it is expected that the EU will issue a law, that requires full traceability of all instruments used in medical procedures, ie. examinations and surgeries. Similar laws have recently been introduced in Japan, and the US is expected to follow in 2013. This means that millions and millions of medical instruments must have added a 2D barcode for identification. As instruments must be kept sterile, it is not possible to use any conventional labelling system. The barcode must be engraved directly onto the instrument. The MPX-90M offers a unique and easy way to to this. It comes with special software for creating and outputting 2D barcodes, a special clamping system for surgical instruments, and a laser pointer to ensure marking in the correct place (laser is similar to that used on EGX-360 and LEF-12). It also features a new type of head cap, more durable than the model used on MPX-90.
Although the new law is not expected in the EU until 2015, there is every reason to be ready. Surgical instrument manufacturers and hospitals alike are expected to start asking about this kind of solution soon, as they want to prepare for the new law. In Japan, the MPX-90M is already being used with success in hospitals. It is becoming popular due to the easy of use and quality of engraving.
